I could update for reals, but this is clearly more fun (stolen from JJ)! You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating HIM/HER? Since when?!" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.
Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-word-answers seldom help anyone out.( This is somewhat lengthy... ) Current Music: TV - that cooking show with the ladies from the Shopping Bags | | Friday, July 24th, 2009 | | 8:26 am |
Words care of hydeist_wannabe (thanks, JJ!) A talk-about-five-words meme. If you'd like me to choose words for you, say "Words!" in your comment. cuteI abhor this word. Or rather, I object very strongly to its use as a descriptor for me. Kittens are cute. Babies are cute. I am not cute. And even if I were (which I'm not), who in their right mind would refer to a friend that way? Calling someone "cute" is like calling them "immature"; it's patronizing, it implies inferiority on the part of the person labelled, and it's disrespectful. Want to give me a compliment? Tell me I'm brilliant or gorgeous or something instead. historyAh, good old history. History and I aren't on such good terms these days, mostly because I'm not at all motivated to work on my thesis. I miss the fantasy aspect of history, actually. I like the nifty costumes and the weird old-timey stuff and the hilarious stories. The long, lonely hours in the archives are significantly less inspiring. Honestly, I can't take the isolation. History is best when shared. basement partiesI've been to some good parties in my time, and basement parties were clearly among the best. Curtis's mom's house was an ideal location for drunken antics, including such memorable experiences as trying gin for the first time, creating lovely aluminum foil hats and, of course, playing SCRATCHMASTER. We seriously need to have a reunion basement party the next time everyone is in town! I think it'll be even better minus the post-high school drama. KermitI love Kermit the Frog. As in, LOVE him. Apparently, back in the day, I used to kiss the TV when the Muppet Show came on. Though I no longer do this, Kermit remains my favourite Muppet. He's generally a good guy, always looking out for the other Muppets. More importantly, however, he's a frog, and he often wears hats. Frogs in hats are the funniest thing ever! Due to the placement of their eyes, there's hardly any space on their heads for headwear, so their hats are always hilariously small. Kermit in a hat never fails to make me smile! sockMy relationship with socks has changed over time. In high school, I had an ongoing argument with Mel over whether white or patterned socks were better. At that point, I was convinced that a collection of interchangeable white socks was the way to go. Once I started doing my own laundry (and, interestingly enough, the number of socks I lost decreased dramatically), I realized that pairing white socks is actually a giant pain, as one must pay attention to subtle differences in wear. As a result, I now own mostly patterned socks. And since Christmas, when I randomly received FOURTEEN pairs of socks as gifts, I own more socks than any other article of clothing. So, I had this birthday...
I've been meaning to post about my super-go-awesome 25th birthday for the past two weeks (so, like, since it happened), but I'm busy and lazy and whatnot, and I'm just getting around to it now. Ah well...better late than never! So yeah...I have totally been birthday'd! The celebrations began with a fantastic party featuring many quality guests (including several people I don't see very often, which made it pretty darn special). There were drinks and cake and quality '90s dance tunes, and a good time was had by all! Despite my insistence that gifts were not required, I ended up receiving an interesting mix of unexpected presents; on the one hand, I got either mind-altering substances or access to them (an LCBO gift certificate from Tiffany and Andy, for instance), and on the other, Heather gave me a book on addiction. Sometimes, I wonder what people think of me (or perhaps my friends just know me better than I'd like to think)... Since my actual birthday landed on a Monday, it was a bit more subdued than the weekend revelries. Nevertheless, Bryan took me out for a quality birthday dinner, and I was showered with more gifts. These included a number of bike accessories I've been wanting for a while (like a light, so I can ride at night!), an amazing "Captain Awesome" shirt, and The Sims 3. Some minor graphics issues prevented me from actually playing my new game at first, but I managed to solve those yesterday, so I'm now all set for fun times with new Sims! When I inevitably reach the end of the summer without having done any thesis research, that will be why. Richelle had to work the evening of my party, so she took me out for dinner and a movie the day after my birthday. I got to see yet more friends on the weekend, when various people (like JJ and Sharon and Mary!) happened to be in town, and delicious brunching adventures were organized. Meghan attended my weekend birthday extravaganza, but for various reasons, I didn't get a chance to collect my gifts (ie. box of useless but hilarious crap) from her until this past weekend, when Meghan, Bryan, and I went to a medieval festival at Upper Canada Village. Now, I'm the proud owner of everything from hideous cleaning slippers to a tiny spatula to Wacky String ("Over 250 feet of safe party fun!!"), and I have pictures of jousting as well! Good times indeed. In conclusion, I had lots of birthday fun, and got lots of cool birthday stuff. Thus far, 25 is looking pretty promising! EDIT: Dammit, I knew that by leaving it this long, I'd forget things. I should have mentioned the lovely mail I received: a card and gift certificate from Bryan's family, and a card and SUPER AWESOME finger puppet (a ram!) from Vicky! SO MUCH BIRTHDAY!!! Monies!
"Congratulations, I am pleased to inform you that you have been awarded a 2009-2010 Ontario Graduate Scholarship. The value of the award is $5,000 per term." Now, I can pay rent and eat food on a regular basis for yet another year! And, the leak in my shower that was causing the moisture that led to the bedroom mushroom growth is getting fixed in the next few days! Everything is coming up Milhouse...er, Debbie! "Why is the mushroom popular at parties?" "Because he's a fungi!"
Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, most people who would be interested have probably heard this already, but I thought it was worth mentioning again. This morning, I was sitting on my bed, chatting on the phone with Tiffany, when I happened to glance behind the door and noticed a MUSHROOM growing in my/Bryan's room! The fungus appears to have originated where the baseboard meets the carpet, and it's surrounded by a small patch of black mould of some sort. I assume the problem is somehow related to water leakage, as the shower/bathtub is located on the opposite side of the mushroom wall (though there's no visible mould on the bathroom side). When the office is open tomorrow, the good people at Osgoode Properties are going to be informed of the situation, at which point it will officially become their problem. So yeah...interior mushrooms. Hilarious, and also mildly distressing...but mostly hilarious! Free granola bars!
Today was a pretty exciting day...I gave my last presentation for the semester (only one more paper to write, and courses are officially over!), I took a new bus route home (and saved 75 cents by not taking the O-Train), and the government tried to steal $59.25 from me (but I got them to promise to give it back). Most importantly, however, my coupon for FREE GRANOLA BARS arrived in the mail! See, these days, I watch too much TV. Actually, it's not even that I watch it...I just keep it on a lot as background noise when I'm marking or playing the Sims or whatever. Anyway, all this TV-on-ness finally paid off a couple of weeks ago, when I saw a Kashi commercial that claimed that one could get a free box of granola bars just by signing up for it on the Kashi website. Naturally, I took out my trusty laptop, and got right to it! A few days ago, I checked the status of my coupon, and found that it would arrive in the next 4-6 weeks...very upsetting. However, to my great surprise, it arrived today! BEST MAIL DAY EVER!!! Now, I just need to decide what kind of granola bars I want. I'm thinking Peanut Peanut Butter...I mean, that's a lot of peanuts... (And yes, this is actually the most interesting thing happening to me right now.) Not much, I'm afraid...
I feel like I should post 'cause I haven't in a while...and also, my selection of possible activites at the moment includes a) continue sitting in the TA office (looking busy by typing stuff), and b) go to the library and pick up books (for a paper that was supposed to be due April 7th, but is now due April 27th). I think the winning choice is clear. The problem, though, is that I don't really have much to say. The vast majority of what I think/talk about in a typical day is school-related, which makes me a pretty dull storyteller. At some point, class stopped being about hilarious stuff (Robbie Shortpants, douching with Lysol, Russia not being there that day...), and focused in on ideas. Now, I'm all for ideas...I like them a lot, in fact...but they don't story-up well. I'm not going to write LJ entries about authority or post-colonialism or heteronormativity or whatever...I'm way too cool for that. I hold out hope that things will pick up when I get into my primary source stuff this summer. Like, I found this advice column from La terre de chez nous (an agricultural magazine from Quebec) that suggested to a girl who had just been dumped that she give up on dating, and go knit a sweater or bake a cake...and this was in 1974! Crazy, I know (though not so much, for a variety of reasons...but that's where it stops being interesting). So yeah...that's more or less how things are going. In other news, Bryan's parents visited us last week, which was super cool. They took us out to eat nearly every night, so I've emerged from the experience somewhat chubbier, but having had a fantastic time. Also, on an unrelated note, I saw two girls on the bus a few weeks ago that were, essentially, Vicky and myself from when we lived together. It was a little weird, and a little sad, but mostly neat in a nostalgic way. I think that's all. My thesis proposal has been approved!
And it's about damn time too! I only handed it in...*checks watch*...nearly eleven weeks ago. But whatever...good to know all this research I'm supposedly doing (yeah, right) isn't in vain. In other news, I'm in Guelph with Heather! Right now, I'm marking papers (I'm on number seventeen of forty...ugh), and Heather's taking a nap. Later, we're going to WOW for delicious raw vegan food, and then we're going to pretend to be scientists in Heather's lab (and by "pretend", I mean that Heather's going to do real lab work while I hang out and look cool). Fun times indeed! EDIT: WOW was randomly closed, so we went to The Cornerstone, and ate cooked vegan food instead. It was still tasty! Orlando!
Did I mention that Bryan and I went to Orlando? 'Cause we totally did...we flew out there on Wednesday and flew back Saturday. In that time, we managed to squeeze in a visit to Disney World, and one to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventre...and it was AWESOME!!! So many roller coasters, so much fun, so few people (we waited, like, five minutes to get on most of the rides)! I highly recommend Orlando in January. It's funny how going to Disney World as an adult is different from going there as a kid, though. I mean, the last time I was there was in 1991, so I wasn't tall enough for most of the fun stuff (and even if I was, Heather was only three, so I couldn't do any of it anyway), Splash Mountain was still under construction (which meant the train only went partway around the park, backwards), and Dad got sick on the spinning teacup ride (which really put a damper on the latter half of the day). This time, things were generally much better. On the other hand, the whole Disney experience seems a bit creepy now: the weird robotic voice telling you about the awesomeness of Disney on the monorail, the mandatory fingerprinting when you enter the Magic Kingdom, the carousel of "progress"...not to mention the Monsters Inc. laugh-in dealie with a giant eye concealing a camera that projects the image of random audience members on a huge TV screen. I mean, talk about the Panopticon! Regardless, I like vacations and I had a fantastic time and I'll totally do it again. Fun stuff indeed! Since everyone else is doing it, here are my 25 things (which may or may not be interesting...):
1. I love being asleep, and sleeping in, and even napping, but I hate going to bed. Going to bed feels like giving up...I worry that I'll miss something exciting after I fall asleep. 2. It bothers me that things happened prior to 1984 (when I showed up and was able to experience them). Studying history is therefore awesome...it helps me to find out what I missed. 3. If I had a lot of money to throw around, I'd buy a corset. In fact, I'd buy a whole lot of sexy lingerie. 4. If I go more than a week without eating some sort of tomato-based Italian food (spaghetti, pizza, etc.), I actually start to suffer withdrawals. 5. I used to be entirely convinced that I couldn't cook, and therefore didn't try. In the past few years, though, I've done a lot of cooking (with reasonably good results), and I love it! 6. Someday, I want to learn to sing (like, beyond the in-the-shower and in-the-car variety). 7. I like to dance because it makes me feel like I can fly. 8. I can watch the same episodes of certain shows (Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, for instance) over and over, and not get tired of them. I also like to reread certain books several times. Sometimes, it's nice to know how things are going to end. 9. I despise being cold. I'll take a sweltering day over a freezing one anytime. 10. Regardless of my actual weight at any given moment, I'll always be about ten pounds from perfection. 11. I like wearing glasses, generally speaking, but they make me feel like I'm watching the world from the other side of a window...it's weird. 12. Artificial banana flavour is the best taste in the world, in my opinion. 13. I can't stay angry with anyone for more than five minutes. 14. I like being told that I'm beautiful. Even if I hear it every day (Bryan is pretty awesome...), I can never hear it enough. 15. I love being on stage. It makes me feel important. 16. I don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but that doesn't bother me too much. 17. I didn't drink water regularly until I was sixteen (before then, I thought it tasted gross). Now, I drink it more often than anything else. 18. Come to think of it, my tastes have generally become less particular over time. I now eat (and even enjoy) many things I previously found disgusting - green peppers, celery, radishes, unmelted cheese, milk, poutine (with vegetarian gravy, evidently)... 19. I used to be indifferent to tofu. Indifference has passed to enjoyment, and then intense cravings. I swear, they lace that stuff with drugs! 20. All of my favourite shoes have bows on them. 21. I think Hallowe'en should come more often. Actually, if I wouldn't have to deal with people's questions, I'd dress up in a different Hallowe'en costume every day. 22. I honestly don't understand the appeal of most video games (other than Tetris, The Sims, and Wii Fit, of course). 23. Driving other people around makes me nervous, 'cause I'm responsible for their well-being. Driving alone is better. Riding a bicycle is the best! 24. I love grocery shopping. Actually, I generally like being in grocery stores, even if it's just to browse. 25. I put off doing this for a while, 'cause I really wasn't sure if I had twenty-five different things to say about myself. It turns out I do! Oh, new TA class...you make me so happy!
Sometimes, I wonder why I decided to do this whole history grad school thing...why I signed up to spend hours trying to figure out what the hell Roland Barthes is talking about with his énoncé/énonciation crap, why I have to try to wrap my head around the difference between history and fiction (if there's even a difference at all - thanks a lot, Hayden White...), why it's perfectly logical for a prof to tell me that the moon doesn't exist (and that, in fact, the moon can't exist). And then, every so often, I have a moment of pure unadulterated awesomeness...like when I'm in the class for which I'm a TA, and we transcribe a sixteenth-century letter, and it ends up being about a guy who takes medicine to cure his kidney stones, and he ends up peeing the bed, and then his wife beats him. Then, I remember that history is hilarious. Current Mood: entertainedCurrent Music: the ambient hum of campus | | Sunday, January 4th, 2009 | | 8:55 pm |
Happy (severely belated) new year!
As I welcomed in the new year in Fredericton, I haven't been able to properly mark the occasion LJ-style until now. It's probably best that I waited till returning to Ottawa, though...my week in New Brunswick was mostly spent in an alcohol-induced haze, so things are much more coherent this way. So, onwards with the quiz (stolen from Robin)! 1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before? Moved in with a boy! We're technically common-law now...it's pretty cool. 2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I sort of kept them...more yes than no, really. I make essentially the same one every year, so I'll just keep pecking away at that. 3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Not that I'm aware of...so, no. 4. Did anyone close to you die? Not really...people close to Bryan died, and I knew those people, and I was sad, but I wouldn't say I was all that close to them. 5. What countries did you visit? Let's see...well, there was Canada...and, uh, Canada. Oh, and there was that time that Bryan and I drove across the border to Maine...for about 20 minutes. Clearly, I need to travel more! 6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008? More parties! Like, the dress-up kind. 7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? May 30th, my last day in Kedgwick. I hope never to be so happy to leave a place ever again! 8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Getting into grad school with scholarships and all that jazz...that made me feel smart. 9. What was your biggest failure? Not quitting my language assistant job...I really should have given that up months before the end of my contract. 10. Did you suffer illness or injury? I had that giant-neck/no-talking thing for a while...a long while, actually. Definitely not fun. 11. What was the best thing you bought? Rizzo and Zappa...best pets ever! (What's up with the lack of numbers twelve and thirteen?) 14. Where did most of your money go? Rent, food, rats...all useful purchases. 15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Moving to Ottawa, going to Fredericton in August, Katemas...many things! 16. What song will always remind you of 2008? Beauty from Pain. It wasn't even a particularly sad year...I just listened to that song a lot. 17. Compared to this time last year, are you: Happier or sadder? Happier! Thinner or fatter? Thinner, but not by much. Richer or poorer? Slightly richer. 18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Exercise. 19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Drinking...though that only applies to the last week, really. 20. How did you spend Christmas? Friend-type adventures, fun times with Heather, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners with various extended family members, partying in ERB, Katemas, additional partying in Fredericton with the Harns. It was a good Christmas! 22. Did you fall in love in 2008? I was already there, and remain very much (if not even more) so. :) 23. How many one-night stands? Zero. 24. What was your favourite TV program? Fixing Dinner...it's the worst show ever, but it's absolutely hilarious! 25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Nah...I can't be bothered to hate people. 26. What was the best book you read? Memoirs of a Geisha...I read it twice. 27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Sam Cooke. I had no idea how many fantastic songs were written by him! 28. What did you want and get? A super-awesome apartment in Ottawa. 29. What did you want and not get? Wii Fit. I only started wanting it after Bryan got a Wii for Christmas, though, so I haven't really had time to pine for it yet. 30. What was your favourite film of this year? The Dark Knight was pretty good...Kung Fu Panda is also a strong contender. 31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I went to Bryan's grad party, which was also my birthday party...and Vicky was there! The Harns also bought me a cake. Overall, twenty-four was a great birthday! 32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? No OC Transpo strike...I was (and continue to be) severely inconvenienced by the lack of buses. 33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? I call it "what I wore to work last year, but with jeans instead of dress pants". It's a step up from my everyday "whatever's clean". 34. What kept you sane? Bryan. 35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Gilles Duceppe totally made my day in the election debates...he always does. 36. What political issue stirred you the most? The election, evidently. 37. Who did you miss? Everyone at one time or another, depending on where I was. 38. Who was the best new person you met? The other first-year history MAs are awesome! 39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008: I need people. 40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: "Don't know much about history, don't know much biology, don't know much about a science book, don't know much about the French I took, but I do know that I love you..." (What can I say? Grad school is making me realize I really don't know very much at all, but in a good way.) Anyone for Christmas?
Christmas came early this year...like, literally. See, Kevin and his girlfriend are driving down to Kitchener to see her family today, and they're dropping Heather off in Guelph along the way, so family-type gift-exchanging good times occurred last night instead of this morning. I received many quality gifts, including a sweater and a giant spaghetti pot from Mom and Dad, a Christmas glass from Heather (as usual!), a gift basket of random stuff (such as J-Lo perfume, which was interesting, to say the least...) from Kevin, and cash monies (which will be put towards much needed winter boots) from Granny. This evening, Mom, Dad, Granny, and I are heading out to Grandma and Grandpa's house for another Christmas dinner. Overall, I'm having a whole lot of Chrismtas! Despite the many holiday festivities, I must admit that this morning was weird. I mean, it's the first Christmas morning that I've spent entirely on my own. Well, I suppose I shouldn't say "entirely"...the rats were here, and I did give them their gifts (which they ignored in favour of climbing on me). It was still a bit odd, though. Ah well...at least I was able to get some laundry done, and start packing, 'cause I'm flying out to New Brunswick for exciting Maritime holiday adventures tomorrow! Merry Christmas, all! Juice!
Does anyone else have a juicer? I'd never had one before, but I recently acquired one from my Granny (she's moving out of her house, so she's trying to get rid of a most of her stuff). I finally got around to trying it out today, and, my god...it's the most fun thing EVER!!! Not only was it thrilling to watch fruits and vegetables being reduced to a pulp in seconds, but I have a delicious glass of fresh carrot-mango juice to drink! You know, I always thought people got heavily into juicing for the health benefits...now, I realize it's because using a juicer is so awesome. Gift'd!
I bought Christmas presents for people! And I wrapped them! And I put them under the tree! It totally looks like Christmas around here. Overall, I really don't have much news at the moment. Things that are annoying me right now include the transit strike and the non-functional elevators in my building...though having to walk up twelve flights of stairs a couple of times this week has convinced me that I seriously need more exercise. New Year's resolution, here I come! Other than that, I've been mostly cooking and cleaning. I like the way the boredom resulting from the end of classes hasn't driven me to, you know, work on my research or something...instead, it's brought out my inner housewife (who knew I even had one?!). Thus far, I've thoroughly cleaned the kitchen, bathroom, and living room. In addition to daily dinner-cooking adventures, I've baked banana bread, oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies, and peanut butter brownies. I'm starting to think I've lost my mind entirely...but then, I'm living in a clean apartment and I'm pretty well fed, so I can't really complain. I guess that's all. 2008 in review...in traditional LJ style!
Okay, so before I start for real, I'd just like to mention that I cheated a bit on the January line for this year...it turns out that I did this same dealie for last year as my first January post, so I skipped that entry ('cause it would have been repetitive). Anyway, on with the nostalgia! First lines from my oh-so-memorable (yeah, right...) LJ entries of 2008: January: 21 deep questions that could really tell you something February: Heather, I tried your lentil stew recipe, and it was Fantastic (see Facebook for photographic evidence)! March: ...so I think I'll sum up my March break in a similar fashion! April: Why Debbie, you ask, why don't you ever post when you're in a good mood? May: Okay, this is it, this is all...my New Brunswick hospital adventures are done! June: I'm in Ottawa! July: It seems to me that I haven't posted in a bit, and I have a vague notion that I should. August: Bryan and I have pet rats! September: So, I just came back from some sort of wine and cheese event. October: I had a dream last night that I was reading Vicky's LJ, and she had posted a very long, very involved, and very exciting story...but when I woke up, I couldn't remember what it was about. So yeah...that's 2008. Mildly intoxicated thoughts...
You know what? Sometimes, something happens that makes me seriously miss the Maritimes. On the other hand, alcohol-inspired adventures with fellow first-year history MA students are AWESOME...I mean, how often do you have the chance to get drunk and talk about Foucault? In unrelated news, people who bitch about their marks are mildly annoying. Overall, it's been a good night. Perhaps I'll make a more comprehensive drunk (or maybe even sober) post tomorrow.
